Ruby Sandhu-Rojon has had a diverse career in the United Nations (UN) system for
more than 34 years. She recently served as the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General for the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel
(UNOWAS). In this capacity, she provided overall leadership and shaping strategic thinking for UN’s engagement in the region. From 2014 to 2017, she served as the UNDP Deputy Assistant Administrator and Deputy Regional Director of the Regional Bureau for Africa where she oversaw the management of 46 Sub Saharan countries. Almost one third of the countries under her supervision and leadership were in crisis or post conflict situations and a large number are LDCs. She also served as UN Resident Coordinator in Ghana from 2010 to 2014, and was the UNDP Country Director in Burkina Faso, where she also assumed the interim role of Resident Representative.
Earlier in her career, Ms. Sandhu-Rojon was posted to Germany as Chief of the African Section of UN Volunteers (UNV), as Deputy Resident Representative of UNDP in Madagascar, and as Special Assistant to the Administrator of UNDP. She started her career as a Programme Officer at the African section of the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM).
Since leaving the UN she continues to be engaged by providing leadership training through the United Nations System Staff College, mentors UN Resident Coordinators as
well as support the UN System on developing the talent pipeline for the future leaders of the UN.
Outside of the UN, she has continued to be active in the development sphere especially on issues combining technology and social impact and working with organizations/companies that are very much anchored locally especially in the Africa region.
She also serves on the Board of Trees for the Future.
